Kali teaches me a lesson!!

Kali told me that she might be losing her two bugs bunny teeth (of which we all tease her and she is okay with) pretty soon. She also showed me, how she might look like without any teeth and how she would have to eat when toothless, like a very very old woman.

It came as a surprise to me, to see her excited about her teeth falling off and how happy she is in preparing herself for what's to come.

"Kali taught me a lesson today!! To be happy in all situations of life and not to worry about anything.  And also that, we might not be in control of what is going to happen but we are always in control of how we react."

Teeth or no teeth, she is still the most beautiful person I've known!! I love her and her attitude a ton!!!

I <3 you too!

You keep me company,
Whenever I feel lonely.
You bring meaning to my life,
And help fight the grief.
You speak the words right from my heart,
And help the silence break apart.
You make every minute live-able,
And wipe away my trouble.
You are a sweet remedy to my broken heart,
And help me make a brand new start.

 P.s. Dear pandorA...thanks for being accessible with $0! :)

Kali - The story of growing up with an angel.

If I say Kali is my little baby sister with an innocent loving heart, it would be a complete understatement. She has been taking many roles in my life, somtimes  being a baby with unconditional love and innocent demands to a highly understanding matured individual with a unique personality.

By the time I was born she was already five and to her I was a doll with life. She not only assumed to have all rights on me but also took up the responsibility of caring me with utmost love, even before I was born. My mom always tells me that she would never drink her glass of milk unless my mom put a glass near her baby bump and assured her the baby (yay! that's me!) did.

When I was three years old and Though there was always a difference of five years that exited between us....we both were more like twins. We both went to the same school, we both sat beside each other and we both learned the alphabets and the numbers together. If there is any faint memory of my early childhood that would be me and Kali sitting beside each other and sharing our lunch boxes at school. She was my best friend and companion, I realized it then or not.

When I was about five, Kali was no more my classmate. I do not know if I ever asked my mom as to why she can't be studying with me anymore or not. She went to a different school and I went to the same old one.

A couple of years  later, I realized how different we both were. We still played together but I got to dominate her all the time. She was more like a little sister to me now and she would obdeiently do whatever I asked her to. She was never a competetion and there was no sister rivalry between us. The relationship with Sru was totally a normal elder sis-younger sis relationship and the age differenece between us always kept our worlds apart. Sru could be the guide, caring sis ready to take the role of mom, friend rarely and of all, a role model to follow. But the relationship with Kali was different. She loved me too much and I took it for granted. She was different I thought or may be the 8-ish year old me could not realize that her mental growth was slower unlike most of us.

As we grow older....the commoness that once existed between us vanished. By my early teen years, I was used to explaining all of my friends and anyone new I met about what Downsyndrome was and is. Never for once did I feel irritatred or saddened to explain though I always wondered how IGNORANT people can be. Sru would tell me that if it was not for Kali in our lives, probably we could have  belonged to the ignorant set of people too or most probably our knowledge of what Down syndrome would have been limited to the one or two lines we read in our General schooling. Which said not much except that it was Trisomy of Chromosome 21 or in simple words Kids with DS have an extra chromosome. That is, they have 47 chromosome instead of  normal 46.

I took it as my responsibility to tell everyone how special that one extra chromosome meant. It is just not an extra chromosome that Kali had. She had more empathy, kindness and genuine love for anybody and everybody she ever met/meets. She could never hurt anyone. The only time I saw pure evilness in her was when she hit an already dead rat with a stick and expressed how relieved she was that it was dead, as she was scared of it wandering in our home since the last two days. Anger, love, want, need, pain, grief...or any other emotion she ever expressed they were always genuine.

By my mid teen years, I realized what an idiot I was to take Kali for granted. I always made sure to never hurt her ever again but to be frank there were a couple of instances when I was rude to her just because I was frustrated with something else. But never for once she was rude to me. Her love & care for me never changed but only evolved. When someone loves you unconditionally and never shows a hint of doubt on whether you have similar feelings towards them, you just can't help but love them the way they truly deserve.

As I grow older kali became a baby....a kid with maybe a mental age of 4-5 years  sometimes, 8 years sometimes , and sometimes way beyond imaginable. Like most DS kids, Kali has a problem with her speech. Speech therapy, two-three decades ago was not so common in India. The speech that she is capable of now is all due to efforts of her never-give-up attidue. Almost everday she adds up a new word to her vocabulary and she always gets elated with her little victory. If she decides to accomplish something she does without any hesitation. She always finds a way to express her feelings or opinions. There are times when she can't and she would feel frustrated but then a little bit of patience from us and herself, she does find a way to express it.

Kali is also an all rounder and an eternal learner. She loves watching television and also loves learning from it. She has learnt more hindu mythology & culture, then I did by watching movies. Strangely, she has no language restrictions. She can watch a english/hindi/telugu and even tamil sometimes and totaly grasp what they are speaking. She is just a proof, that communication is done not just through words spoken. Oh, by the way she watched Air force One movie a couple of hundred times. She loves explaining me what each of the character looks like and does in that movie. She has an amazing memory too.

Kali is a techie too. Computers, mobile phones, games, Iphones, cameras and Ipads....She taught me more than I taught her. If I ever was too impatient to teach her something, she found a way to teach herself. As most DS kids would, she learnt from imitation or looking at others. Kali also has more medals and certificates then I do. She has attended a number of special schools for Kids with special needs. Kali realizes that she is different and we make sure she knows she is the most sweetest, most beautiful and most lovliest person on the planet.

Kali is idealistic too. Probably she never forgot the lessons of  share-your-happiness-with-others, mom taught us as kids. She loves to share her chocolates, toys and anything she loves with her friends. The way to make her truly happy is not to buy a candy for her but for the 70-80 friends of her, at the Rehab institute.

Making Kali happy is what makes me and my family happy. Her wishes can be small like a new book/pen to going to a school in USA. A red car, a home with an elevator, visiting Delhi, visting USA etc are just a couple of wishes we were lucky enough to fulfill for her. But there are many more she wishes for. And I wish for only one thing, which is to make her wishes and wishes of people like her come true. No matter what I  try to do for them , I can never match up to what they do for the world. They are the  true propagators of humanity duely ignored by most of us.

Neverthless, you will still be making a bonding with it & easily fall in <3 with.

And she waited.............

I waited,
hoping for the bus to come on time,
A long journey it had been, few more miles to be go before being home,
I looked at the crowd around, tired and gloomy they all seemed,
maybe the comfort of home is what they dream of too, I told myself,

but standing out in  the crowd,
there was this one person I saw,
bright, vigilant, cheerful and beautiful she was,
There was a small group of people around her,
friends/family/random strangers I guessed,
they all seemeed to be capitavted by the warm embrace her smile generoulsy seemed to give away,
to which i wasn't immune,
There is something about her that's really queer, I told myself,
She seemed old but a young beautiful women she  was,
as age is to heart and not body,
When she spoke...she spoke with all her heart, eyes sparkling, a face glowing, a smile so attractive,
swaying her hands and wriggling her fingers mesmerizingly,
she was just purely Enchanting if anything,
she seems like someone I know, I wondered.

In the bus,
I tired to sleep hoping to cut the long joureny home short,
and that was when I heard her speak right behind my seat sitting in the adjacent row,
An energy she seemed to give away with every word she spoke,
could be either the gleam in her eyes or the joy in her voice  or may be both,
but I just couldn't resist not looking back at her,
She is so much like some one I knew so well, I thought.

The people around her were as happy as they could be,
laughing, talking aloud, some sang too...a happy ride it was,
it just din't seem to be a long boring bus ride anymore,
women & men, young & old, white & black & all the colors inbetween,
seemed to have made a deal to make it a journey-happy & warm,
she seemed like an angel acting  like a string tying the hearts of everyone she met,
to make the most beautiful garland of humanity so pure and true,
She is so much like some  one I knew, I felt.

when a place she said was home came,
a cheerful goodbye everyone said as she got down,
everyone in the bus sighed aloud and wished her happiness,
happiness that she seemed to carelessly give away to friends  known & unknown,
but there is somthing not right about her i thought,
because she was so much like some one I knew, so well.

when she got down and got her stuff together,
I saw her look around with a smile that was fading,
seemed like she was in search of some one she knew would be there for her but wasn't,
she shivered in the freezing  cold trying to cover herself with a scarf that was inefficient,
everyone in the bus felt the pain of her fingers and face getting numb and cold to the harsh weather which was immune to charm of this princess of joy & warmth,
She laughed and said somthing aloud looking at he people in the bus,
what she said no one hear, but everyone waved her goodbye and smiled as long as they could see her, as the bus made the move,
She kep her face lit all this time with the smile that was not fading,
but as I looked at her eyes, i saw the sprakle lost,
her hands seemed to suffer the pain of numbness not from the cold  weather but the coldness of someone's heart,
I saw her as long as I could as everyone in the bus got back to the joyful mood  she created,
this could have been the reason why,
no one but me saw the tears that felll down her cheeks as her smile faded again,
Oh Yeah, she is someone I know for sure I said aloud looking at the distant figure of her,
a woman I knew so well,
as she waited.

This picture belongs to the original story that inspired this kind of writing style!

P.S.
1. Who ever she was..............I wish she found what she deserved by now and that she MOVED ON.
2. This style of writting is inspired  by a story I ready 6-7 years ago. Grammatically wrong but expressively perfect.
3. The fun of writing is when you consciously break all the grammatical rules.

Dear Simbha- A Letter Never Posted.

Dear Simbha...
I hope you have safely reached heaven. Hope you have met Strippy and if you have already, tell him that he is loved and remembered back here. I hope both of you are having a great time together exploring your new home.I hope there are a lot many dirty ponds that are oxygen & worm rich and friends there who don't compete.

As you know I was eagerly awaiting for you all these days so your death came as a blow to me. Its sad that the destiny as always has been cruel to me, to take the little-cute-fishy-you away from me just as soon as we met. Yes, I am hurt and humiliated that you left me even when I cared and loved you so much. Just when I felt that you were reciprocating my feelings....Just when I started believing that I can actually love you as much as I did Strippy....Just when I was foolishly making you part of my life...part of my future.....YOU LEFT..... Your death came as a shock to me but I am angry with myself. I feel guilty too.

Did I overfeed you? Did I not change the water regulary? Did I not put the antifungal medicine? Did I not speak to you day in and night out to make you feel at home? Did I not make sure that the water was not too cold or too warm but just what you needed? Did I not low my TV volume so that you would be comfortable? Did I not plan to take you both to some pond nearby the next day to leave you in your natural habitat so that you could be ' happy and living' ? Did I not follow all the instructions I was given?

Okay! I am really sorry that I forgot to tell you a bye that day when I left in a hurry. But trust me you where in my thoughts all the time. And then when I came back home.......that evil afternoon what I see is that Simona is almost dieing and you were just doing great though you had that scar on your head...The same scar that Strippy had before it died. I was actually scared for you too but was more worried for Simona. I know you loved her too and were worried for her.

You know what Simbha? I had a terrible time that night. Yes,I was away from you the whole night....but I was too scared to come and have a look at Simona. I really din't want to see any of you dieing. I now wonder how it must have been for you. Were you in pain? What is it that killed you? Were you too worried for Simona? Was it really that I over fed you? Or was that scar a tumor? I will never know...but I am sorry if I have not taken enough care of you. But believe me you were the most beautiful gold fish ever with a shaded tail of white and gold...with the most amazing pouty fishy lips that I do never forget. Remember you will always be loved.

RIP,
Mourning Archana.

"Lets make our story"-She said.

4.45Am
He couldn’t sleep all night. He was too excited anticipating how memorable the next day was going to be in his life.
He was almost mad with excitement as he lay on his bed with his big-brown eyes wide open, looking at the night sky through his window. The smile that lit his face when she said she was ready to meet him a week ago was still adorning his boyish-innocent looking face. The sparkle in his eyes which reflected how happy a man in love could be was only getting brighter as each minute ticked by.

He held the little box close by the whole night. A day more and the ring would be on her soft-delicate finger, he thought.

Everything was meticulously planned. The restaurant would be of her favorite choice, decorated with her favorite flowers, the music that would be played once she entered shall be her favorite one. He gave special importance to the ring he would present her. He felt both anxious and happy with all the plans he made to make the day big for him and her.

The sparkle in her eyes, when she would see him is all he dreamt of as he fell asleep staring at the brightest star.

7.45Am

“You don’t want to waste a minute of today. Do you?” He heard his father saying as he woke up to the warm embrace of the sunrays that filled his room.

“Yes”, he said as he smiled back.

Everyone at home - his mother, his dad and he particularly were happy andcontempt content that day. He already had this feeling of a happy successful man building up in his heart, as he thought of the events that were to unfold in a few hours. It would be the last day in his aviation academy. One more hour of flying and he would be a licensed pilot. With a track record of distinctions he already had the best offers coming from the best of the best aviation industries.

Flying was his destiny and to reach his destiny was his passion. She once asked him if it would be her or flying and he said the obvious. Though she pretended to be upset with his answer, she felt proud inside.

9.45Am

He got a clearance to fly at 10.00Am that day. But he was always before his due time.

When his instructor called him saying they should postpone the class by an hour, he had a hard time convincing him that he would go alone.

He had no time to spare that day. He planned that he would be landing by 11.00Am,would reach the restaurant by 11.20am and he would still have to pass 10 long minutes before he could see the one who was ruling his heart since 3 years.

10.15Am

A clear sky, a perfect weather and with a happy heart he felt like a king ruling the sky and the world below flying the aircraft, all by himself.

He only wished she was beside him at that moment. As he looked down at the match sized buildings and the pea sized vehicles moving, he wondered if he was flying right above her.

It was amazing the way he met her and fell in love with her. His friends told him love between 2 people never met can never happen. But as he came to know more of her and She more of him…both knew this was it.

Love needs no reason to begin and thereafter not a million reasons could stop it.

Let’s make our own love story, she said and both decided they shall neither see each other for some time until they both felt sure what they were feeling was true and meant to last long.

He took the ring from the box and looked at it for one more time. “2 more hours” he said and winked at the ring with a big smile.

10.45Am

Mr.Rao felt a sudden heaviness in his heart as he read the headlines in big red bold words on his television screen. “Chopper Crashed”

The visuals of a burning chopper, made his mind blank and heart miss a beat. He trembled as his eyes were filled with tears. He was scared as he watched the news for more details.

“The aircraft had crashed straight onto the road. Few people who witnessed the aircraft swirling before it crashed on the road say that the pilot acted in a noble way as he...…Let’s hear to what a witness here has to tell about this fatal accident….” The reporter spoke as the cameraman zoomed on to the burning chopper behind her.

“When the plane crashed, we were right in front of it….we saw that the pilot was hurt and had blood stains all over his face….we first thought he was dead…Everyone was shocked and did not know what to do..We were scared too...but when I saw his hand move…I rushed towards him… he was struggling to free himself… but the seat belt was stuck around him…I was about 4 feet close to him and was about to reach him when he waved me to go away…I was confused and scared …I ran back when I saw the sparks coming off the engine…And in a minute the whole chopper was in flames…See I’m burnt all over my right shoulder and both my hands too…But I feel bad that I couldn’t help him…and to think he waved me to go away…to go away is”, he stopped his sentence incomplete as he burst into tears.

“As is obvious the pilot is A HERO. He tried to save others till his last breath and averted a major mishap from happening. As we can see the human and property loss that could have resulted if the plane hit any of the buildings here or the petrol bunk nearby would be unimaginable…..”The reporter continued.

“NO…NOT MY SON”, Mr. Rao shouted.

But when he heard the reporter say his son’s name…he felt numb.

4.45Pm

“It’s an accident case Dr. Siya. We have to submit the report as early as possible.” Dr.Riyaz told her.

She silently went in to the post mortem room. Her profession made her too strong she thought as she saw the corpse lying in front of her. She saw many indigestible sights before but this one was the most horrifying. The face was burnt beyond recognition and the body charred.

“There is something here…” her assistant murmured pointing towards the dead man’s hand.

She saw a little box tightly held in his right fist. She opened the box and saw the most beautiful ring ever with the letters S&A inscribed in a heart.

A diamond ring the way she told him she wanted with the first letters of his&her name inscribed together within a single heart.

“Ankit” She said and the next moment her heart stopped.
**********************************************************

“You don’t believe this”? She asked him.

“Yes, I don’t.” He said with a  smile.

“Wait a minute.” She said as she went to fetch something.

“Look at this.” She said as she handed him 2 diaries.

On the first page of both the diaries a photo was stuck. One was the photo of a beautiful girl in her apron with a stethoscope in her hands and the other was a man in his aircraft. One thing that was striking in both of the pictures was the sparkle in their eyes and the smiles that lit their faces.

“They made their story...a touching one.” He said rather to himself.
"Let's make our story.....a happy one" She said

Rajiv and Aarathi-A story of Love.

30 Seconds since the truck hit Rajiv’s bike and sped away.
The driver of the truck was too drunk to even realize what he just did to 26 year old Rajiv.
Rajiv laid there in the chilling cold, with his head on the divider of NH9. He tried hard to push the bike that was crushing his already broken left leg, with his right hand. The pain he felt in his back and the left limbs was far more excruciating than he could endure. He wished either for the pain or his life to end at that very moment. But the warm blood that was oozing from his forehead flowing down his left cheek and neck reminded him ofAarthi’s cold fingers and her warm embrace.

It has been exactly a year since he last saw Aarthi on 06/06/07, the day he noted down as the most painful day in his life in the dairy which he started writing since that day.
It was 10 minutes past 5.00pm when he saw Aarthi sitting at the corner table of their favorite restaurant. As always Aarthi reached before him. How much ever Rajiv tried he always got late and She was always before time.

As Rajiv lay on the hard concrete road, staring into the dawn sky at the fading stars, he remembered the gleaming eyes of Aarthi. Her eyes always got brighter when he was with her. He had no doubts on the fact that she was madly in love with him. So was he, but he never could dare to tell her his feelings. Not that he was afraid of rejection. He knew that Aarthi was longing to hear what she already told him. But he did not want to commit himself in a lifelong relationship when he himself was depending on his parents for all his financial needs. Just a few more days and I will propose her he kept telling himself since the day Aarthi proposed him a year ago on 06/06/06.

Aarthi was excited to see Rajiv. She was about to tell Rajiv that it was exactly a year since she proposed him and exactly 2 years since they first met when Rajiv said, “I need time to settle first, Career is important everything else can wait. Forget me please.” It came as a shock to Aarthi that Rajiv still could not respect her feelings. After a long conversation which eventually ended in a heated argument, both left their favorite restaurant andparted their ways.

Rajiv could not see the tears in Aarthi’s eyes that she held back while she said a‘Good Bye’ with a smile on her face. If Rajiv turned back and looked at Aarthi he would have seen her looking at him with longing eyes with tears rolling down her cheeks. But that evening he did not look back, even though he longed to hug Aarthi and assure her that it will not be long before they would be back together again.

Aarthi kept calling Rajiv for the months that followed. But Rajiv bluntly refused her every call. And each time he avoided her call it broke his heart. But he really wanted time for himself and for Aarthi to choose the paths best for them. As days passed the frequency with which Aarthi called Rajiv reduced. And 6 months after their break up, Aarthi never called Rajiv again. Rajiv very much missed Aarthi and he many a times thought of getting back to her. But his determination to succeed in his life held him back from going back to her.

On 07/06/08, at 5.10 p.m Rajiv received a call on his phone. It was the HR of the company of his dreams who told him the good news he was yearning to hear for so long. He finally got his dream job. The first person he wanted to share the news was Aarthi and he immediately dialed her number. After an hour and still not being able to reach her or any of their common friends, Rajiv decided to go to Aarthi’s place. Not finding any means of transport he took his bike and started for her place at 11.00pm on the NH9 the very road on which they both together used to go for long drives.

Rajiv was about to reach Aarthi’s place in about 30minutes when he met with an accident. Even after30 minutes after the fatal accident, Rajiv laid there with blood still oozing from his head. Rajiv did not know if he was hallucinating or if Aarthi was really beside him with tears in her eyes as she wiped the blood off his face with her cold fingers.  Rajiv said “I am sorry Aarthi” as he closed his eyes to never open again.
It was at 5.45 A.m in the morning when Dr.Parvesh, driving a Car on the NH9 noticed a man lying in a pool of blood. Dr.Parvesh realized it was too late and that the young man died of excess bleeding. When Dr.Parvesh looked at the face of the dead young man, he was reminded of his daughter who committed suicide 6 months ago. When he saw the Diary of Rajiv beside his bike and a picture of Aarthi and Rajiv in it, he looked at the sky and burst out crying looking at the only star that was still blinking. He now understood why his sensitive dear daughter left him.
